Day 40 June 15, 2017

  • Daily mileage 20
  • Total mileage 718
  • Hours hiked 7:00 am to 7:15 pm

Hello Sierra. I think I am going to like you.

Got up early this morning to take advantage of the Wifi at the KM General Store. Actually got everything done that I wanted to do before the maddening crowds slowed it down to a crawl. Funny part was, there were two of us sitting on the porch lapping up the Wifi.  The other early riser was AppleJack who is probably the second oldest person in KM right now, with yours truly being the oldest.  I guess the point of this is that with age does come a certain amount of wisdom.  You want Wifi in KM, be prepared to get up at 4:30 am!

Legend the trail angel was making coffee and pancakes so I partook in that before heading back to the trail.

The beginning of today's hike was flat and fast.  The landscape gradually changed and water was definitely more plentiful. Then we came out of a burn area and emerged into a large meadow, and it was like the Sierra was all around us. It was stunning. I had to sit down and eat lunch on the spot just to drink it all in.

Shortly after lunch, the trail took us to a bridge over one of the arms of the Kern River. Not only was it a great place to relax in the sun, it was very fun watching all the swallows coming and going from under the structure. After a break that probably went on too long, it was time to tackle the hill that would eventually take us up to within a hundred feet of ten thousand feet of elevation.  And that is where all of us are camping tonight.

Home for the night
It was a very great day of hiking.
