Why do I want to hike the PCT?

In my first 60 years of life, in part:
  • I have watched the sun rise from the top of Ayers Rock.
  • I have watched the sun set from the top of the Chilkoot Pass.
  • I have enjoyed the mid-day sun on the trails of Cinque Terra.
  • I had the great fortune to meet and marry a very intelligent lady who also happens to be very beautiful.
  • Together we have launched two very smart and beautiful (handsome) kids into the world.
  • I have wallowed in the muds of the West Coast Trail.
  • I have hiked over the tops of passes on the Routeburn Track.
  • I have cracked 36 minutes in a 10K several times.
  • I came within 1 1/2 minutes of cracking the three hour marathon barrier.
  • I have hiked counter-clockwise around Mont Blanc.
  • I have hiked clockwise around Mount Rainier.
  • I have schlepped margaritas on the beaches of Mexico.
  • I have sipped wine in Tuscany.
  • I have eaten breakfast in the shadow of the pyramids.
  • I have eaten many lunches in the shadows of old growth forests on the coast of British Columbia in a previous career.
  • I have eaten dinner in the shadows of skyscrapers of New York City.
  • I, along with my wife, have started two very successful retail businesses.

But, I have never, ever attempted to hike from Mexico to Canada in one summer.  So, obviously, that has to be fixed.

I first heard of the PCT many years ago, but decided it was something that I wanted to have a crack at somewhere around the summer of 2010.  The first window of opportunity to take the time away from kids, businesses and a wife was 2017.

And, yes, I have read Wild.  But I am very fortunate to know exactly who I am, and I have no reason to try to go out and "find myself", so the book had absolutely no influence on my decision to hike the PCT.

  2. hi jack, I heard you went for a hike. I also read "wild", and the trail sounds challenging, rustic, and beautiful. I am now following your blog and hope we can have you and Stevie over when you get back. We would love to hear about more of this adventure. Have a great hike,
Take care, Ken & Cathy Wright
