Day 39 June 14, 2017

Zero day.

Pretty much nothing to say about today.  I ate whenever the opportunity arose and am consequently in dire need of an ATM.  Oh well, pretty limited opportunities to spend money in the Sierra. It was, I think, a much needed day of nothingness for me. This was only my second full zero day and it felt great.
This was breakfast. Yes that is a pancake about the size of a hubcap. The plate is under it somewhere.
During the early evening we gathered everyone in our hiking "family" for a photo. This was the first time that we actually had a headcount. There are fifteen of us, all determined to make hiking the Sierra both safe and fun. The adventure begins tomorrow!

15 members of our trail family

To describe what is meant by the hiking "family", we rarely hike together. In the entire 700 or so miles that I have hiked, it has been with someone else for likely less than 25 miles. We also do not always camp together. We do see each other throughout the hiking day as we take breaks. But when we reach a bottleneck point such as a trail town, we try to get together and have some laughs and swap trail stories. This will all change in the Sierra as we are committed (at this point anyway) to travel closer to each other and to group up for stream crossings and mountain passes.

  1. Hi Jack......Glad to see that you made it through the desert intact. That alone is an amazing accomplishment. We are enjoying reading your blog and glad to hear that you will be with a group in the Sierra's. I think you need to write a book when you are done !!..safe journeys my friend
